New Screening Guidelines: Don't Test Men Over 75 For Prostate Cancer

Over
the age of 75 years, manpower should no longer be screened for prostate
cancer the Crab, according to recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services
Task Force published on August 5, 2008 in the Annals of
Internal Medicine.
Additionally, they indicate that younger workforce should talk over the
potential risks and benefits of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
treatment with their doctors earlier performing the test.

Prostate
cancer affects this small gland in the male procreative system. In
2007, approximately 218,890 workforce were diagnosed with
prostate gland cancer in the U.S.. One in six hands will invite this diagnosis
at some point in his life. Currently, screening is performed using
a digital rectal exam or the PSA test. While the PSA test has a higher
sensitivity and is more likely to detect cancer, these cancers are
normally in identical early stages and so take years to affect the man's
health. Often, cancers detected with this tests take more than 10 eld
to train hold.

The screening process, while relatively
standard, can be associated with some physical and psychological harms.
Physically, the man must undergo biopsies, and there is the opportunity for
unnecessary treatment. Psychologically, false positives may be
detected, leading to anxiety. The discourse of prostate cancer itself
can experience complications including urinary incontinence and impotence.
However, early stage untreated cancers rarely cause any of
these
side effects -- meaning that, at a certain age, it is possible that man
is harmed by being screened for prostate gland cancer with few potential difference
benefits.

Men older than 75 in the U.S. have an average
anticipation of just about 10 days, and in this population, death is
more likely to come due to heart disease or stroke, rendering
cognition about prostate gland cancer status largely moot. Thanks to this,
screening for prostate gland cancer, according to the Task Force, provided
comparatively few health benefits while still preeminent to harm which was
mostly physical but part psychological when men ar 75 and older.

Men
younger than 75 can likewise have a life expectancy shorter than the adjacent
ten years as a result of chronic diseases. Individuals in this
population are likewise unlikely to benefit from screening.

For
younger men, they concluded that there is not sufficient evidence to
balance the risks and harms, so each private should assess his risks
separately.

The Task Force Chair, Ned Calonge, M.D., M.P.H.,
summarizes: "Because
many prostate cancers grow tardily, early catching may not benefit a
patient's health and in some cases may regular cause harm." He continues,
explaining current policies on the screening process: "We encourage manpower
younger than 75 to discuss with
their clinicians the potential--but uncertain--benefits and the possible
harms of getting the PSA test before they decide to be screened."

Nearly
one-third of all workforce in the U.S. over the age of 75 are having PSA
testing performed, according to current information. Most medical
organizations suggest that it is prudent to break screening when
an single has an average expectancy of less than 10 years, but this
is the number one explicit long time to be specified for this test. There are
presently deuce ongoing studies that will help clear up the potential difference
benefits of screening in men under 75: the National Cancer Institute's
(NCI) Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and
Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial and the European Study of Screening for
Prostate Cancer.

This Task force is an independent panel of experts in prevention and
primary maintenance, with a mission to conduct rigorous, impartial analyses of
the evidence for and against many clinical preventive services such as
screening, guidance, and preventive medications. for clinical
incumbrance services, the Task Force defines many of the gold standard
methods.

For clinicians, additional information john be set up on the Agency
for Health Care Research and Quality website or AHRQ's National Guideline
Clearinghouse.

For men world Health Organization have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, information around
treatment john be establish on the effective health
care portion of the AHRQ internet site, describing effective health
care.

Black Crowes Caw Out Gretchen Wilson for Alleged Song Stealing

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but non when royalties are at stake.

The Black Crowes have filed a copyright-infringement suit against country star Gretchen Wilson, accusative the self-dubbed Redneck Woman of rending off parts of their 1991 hit "Jealous Again" on her new single, "Work Hard, Play Harder."

It may only be rock 'n' tramp, but it has the brothers Robinson mad enough to file suit not only against Wilson, just against Wilson's label, Sony BMG, the publishing company J Money Music and TNT, which is victimization Wilson's song in a promotion for the new season of Saving Grace.

(We have videos for both tracks below, for your consideration.)

So far, Chris and Rich Robinson as well as Wilson have personally refrained from commenting on the similarities between the songs. But the Black Crowes' longtime manager is chiming in with his two cents.

"We find the musical verses of Wilson's song to be such an obvious example of copyright violation that I expect all parties to reach a relatively warm resolution to avoid legalization."

On the smart side, should the Crowes' claims hold in margaret Court, at the very least it would show that the band's peers, if not necessarily their critics, actually do listen to their euphony all the way through.

Whaddya think? A authorise case of song swiping or
are the Crowes cluck for zippo? Sound off in the comments.

Dispatch From BEA: Witches, Barnacle Penises Highlight the Year's Buzz Books

Adventures in kerning.Courtesy of Morrow; Holt; Little, Brown.

New York's Boris Kachka reports from Book Expo America, the book industry's largest get-together, which runs this weekend in Los Angeles.

Maybe it was the early hour — eight in the morning — but today's BEA "Buzz Panel," the annual ritual whereby six editors try to manufacture excitement for their very special galleys, was astoundingly brisk and efficient. Unlike last year, there were no video presentations or long, teary effusions. Forty minutes after Publishers Weekly's editor-in-chief, Sara Nelson, introduced the editors, the whole thing was over. This is entirely thanks to Nelson, who peppered the editors with questions actually relevant to the booksellers ("What's the writer's backstory?" "Who's the audience for this book?") and interjected her own buzzy testimony ("I've met Kira Salak," Nelson said of the travel writer whose first novel, The White Mary, is out this fall, "and she is an incredible storyteller.") You get the feeling she could have done this on her own.

Buzzed books (only one per editor this year) seemed more or less split between kooky dysfunctional families and, well, witches. Witches are huge. Kathleen Kent's The Heretic's Daughter and The Lace Reader, by Brunonia Barry (you can call her Sandy), both feature them. And though Nelson insisted "they couldn't be more different," they are both set in Salem, and the latter comes with a built-in publicity tour pushing Barry as Salem's answer to Savannah's John Berendt. (One reason for the glut of witches? Barnes and Noble's lead fiction buyer, Sessalee Hensley, likes Salem, we heard publishing employees gossip on the floor later.) Richard Nash, who helms Soft Skull Press, led with something we've all been waiting for — essentially a book version of Little Miss Sunshine called The Flying Troutmans, right down to "three crazy people traveling in a van." Nelson had the last word: "Edgy enough for twentysomethings, and not so super-cool that older readers wouldn't like it."

Most of the digressing was left to Harmony editor John Glusman, owing to the fact that what he's selling, The Book of Animal Ignorance, is basically one long digression, a smart bathroom read from Aardvark to Worm. Based on a BBC quiz show, it features such delightful factoids as the animal with the largest penis: the lowly barnacle (it can be seven times as long as its body). And even then, Nelson cut right to the heart of the matter. "Are there pictures?" she asked. "Yes," Glusman replied, "which is important to me, because I don't like to read." —Boris Kachka

Footloose - Bacon Returns To Stage With Family Concert

FOOTLOOSE star KEVIN BACON will return to his musical roots when he performs at a New York concert with his brother on Tuesday (20May08).

Bacon, 49, formed his folk band The Bacon Brothers Duo with older brother Michael in 1995.

The pair is set to headline The Queens Theatre in the Park Gala with a 70-minute set that will raise funds for local performing arts programmes.

But the actor - who shares two children with his wife of 20 years, actress Kyra Sedgwick - admits he's anxious to take the stage, insisting even his own family is reluctant to attend his performances.

He says, "I always say the biggest surprise for people is that we don't totally suck. And we don't expect anyone to like it or to give us a pass based on the fact that there's an actor or a celebrity in the band. We just want people to put on an even playing field and to have fun.

"It's like pulling teeth to get (my family) to come. My kids, love me as they do, they usually have something they're more interested in doing other (things) than coming to our show."

The Bacon brothers have released four studio albums in the 13 years since their debut.
